Why is terrace farming done in hilly regions?

Ans. Hilly region are prone to soil erosion and water scarcity. To prevent the loss of topsoil from the hills side terrace farming done. The cut terraces allow water to slow down while they flow from the upper hill towards the lower side of the hill. Terrace farming is practised in the hills of Uttrakhand, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nepal and many parts of the world. Terrace farming over the hills How is it done? The sloping hill side is cut into footsteps like fashion. In each step the soil is made flatten and ploughed for cultivation. The sides of the steps are grown with plants which have extensive roots to hold soil in place so that to prevent soil erosion.
